Sama Baby spotlights the Sustainable Cotton Project:

Located in California’s Central Valley, the world’s most productive agricultural region, the Sustainable Cotton Project (SCP) focuses on the production and use of cotton, one of the most widely grown and chemical-intensive crops in the world.

Since 1996, SCP has brought farmers, manufacturers, and consumers together. SCP’s guiding philosophy of “cooperation for a change” fosters information-sharing among these groups to develop a Cleaner Cotton™ industry.

In 2003, SCP joined the Community Alliance with Family Farmers (CAFF) to strengthen its operations and reach other farm and consumer audiences. CAFF and SCP provide growers with information about biological farming techniques and educate the public about the importance of reducing chemical use in fiber and food production and supporting local farmers.

Because of cotton’s versatility, it is used for many food and fiber products, making it one of the most widely traded commodities on earth. Yet the simple act of growing and harvesting one pound of cotton fiber to make a T-shirt takes a toll on the earth’s air, water, and soil, and has significant impacts on the health of people in cotton growing areas.

Cotton cultivation uses approximately 11% of the world’s pesticides, though it is grown on just 2.4% of the world’s arable land12. Some of these chemicals are classified as toxic or carcinogenic by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. In developing countries, where regulations are less stringent, the negative impacts are more severe.

SCP’s programs encourage the production and demand for California grown Cleaner Cotton™.

PRODUCTION: The BASIC program focuses directly on farm issues. SCP helps farmers develop a working knowledge of practices that reduce chemical use that can be successfully and economically applied to cotton.

DEMAND: The Cleaner Cotton™ Campaign helps manufacturers develop strategies to incorporate Cleaner Cotton™ and organic cotton fibers into existing products. Manufacturer demand is essential to increasing market opportunities for farmer’s growing Cleaner Cotton™ and organic cotton.

Constance Marie and Luna Marie are Eco Savvy! March 25, 2010

Actress Constance Marie is a new mom! The former George Lopez star and her fiancé, yoga teacher Kent Katich, welcomed daughter Luna Marie Katich on Thursday, February 5th 2009 in Santa Monica, Calif.

Constance, 43, announced her pregnancy — and the sex of the baby — in September of last year. Deciding to take the parenthood plunge came later in life for Constance, who laughingly shared,

“After 10, 11 years of playing a mom, starting with Selena and then to the George Lopez show, I think I finally decided I wanted to be one in real life!”   (Source, People Magazine )

Since then, Constance has learned a lot about creating an eco-friendly environment for Luna. Sama Baby recently gifted Constance some of our eco- friendly products as part of a birthday bag for Luna’s 1st birthday, and received a thoughtful thank you card from her:

Thank you sooo much for helping us celebrate Luna Marie’s 1st Birthday!!!
The “It’s Fun to be One” Gift Bag was Awesome!!!
Constance Marie

Words from Constance herself: One of the things I discovered in over three years of trying to get pregnant was how the toxicity of certain products and the environment around us can affect our bodies. I also learned that often times the most toxic room in the house can be the nursery. This is because everything from the paint to the varnish to the flooring is new. So in order to keep my baby as healthy as possible I decided I wanted to build a non-toxic/green nursery.

Well done Constance! 🙂 That’s why we know you will enjoy our organic cotton garments! To shop for your very own Sama Baby products visit .  To read tips from Constance on an eco-friendly nursery click here!

Thank You Note- From a Houston Sama Fan! February 4, 2010

Today we would like to share some nice words from a loving Houston mom, isn’t her daughter adorable!!  Also, check out her Indian cook book, coming out sometime this year!

Dear Sama Baby,

At my baby shower, I received a gift that elicited a bunch of “ooohs and “ahhhs” from the guests.  A good friend had picked out the Sama baby gown, knotted hat, washcloths and a dress for my baby girl, Jaya.  The washcloths are perfect for her baths, since they are so gentle on her skin, unlike the rough towel-like ones.  I also love the gown, since I can easily check her diaper and change it, and my baby lounges and naps comfortably in the gown. The soft pink color of the gown is beautiful, and the elephant logo is so cute!  The “Raspberry Rose Rock star” dress will be perfect when the weather warms up.

I am from Houston and have an Indian cookbook, Entice with Spice, coming out this year, and I teach Indian cooking classes at Sur La Table, Williams-Sonoma, and Whole Foods.  Right now though, I am taking a break from the classes and enjoying the days with my precious baby girl.  Of course, in the evening when my husband comes home, he takes her from me and won’t let go!

Thanks Sama Baby for making such pretty and practical items, and thanks to my friend for being so thoughtful and choosing a wonderful gift!

Here is a picture of my baby napping in her Sama baby gown.
