Alicia Silverstone’s view on Sama Baby! May 4, 2010

Recently Alicia Silverstone posted about Sama Baby on her website,  Here is what she had to say:

I recently came across SAMA Baby, a clothing company that makes children’s clothes that are totally organic and eco friendly.  I know that many of you Kind Lifers have little ones, so if you’re on the hunt for earth friendly outfits for your kids, take a look.

SAMA Baby was started by 3 sisters who wanted to create a socially conscious, eco friendly and organically sustainable company for like-minded customers.
SAMA Baby doesn’t bleach, use chemical softeners, harsh toxic dyes, or mix synthetic materials in with their garments, which is really great.  And they have such adorable clothes for babies and kids!!  You can take a look at all the clothes HERE.

Of course the first choice for me would be used clothes.  I grew up on hand-me-downs, and I still wear mostly used clothes.  So I can’t wait to buy used clothes when I have kids!  In fact, I was in Canada years ago and found the cutest little used overalls while my husband was looking for shorts, so I got them for when we had kids… Or to gift to someone who had a kid!  They were just so cute, I couldn’t resist.  That may be a little weird… But my point is, there is a bunch of really cute used clothing for kids out there!

Where do you buy clothing for your kids?

Maxine Bahns and family are Sama Fans!! May 3, 2010

We recently received a thank you note from Maxine Bahns for the Sama gifts she received for Madison’s 1st birthday through Jewels and Pinstripes!! See a copy of the note below:

The Mentalist actress Maxine Bahns and husband, adventure racer Patrick Watson welcomed their daughter on Sunday March 8th 2009, in Santa Monica. Madison Rose Watson was born at 1:50p.m., weighing 6 lbs. 2 oz. and was 19 1/4 inches long. “I love the nickname Maddie,” says Bahns. “And my husband’s mom’s name is Rosemary, so we wanted to honor her by giving our daughter the name Rose.” This is the first child for the couple, who wed in 2007.

When we heard Madison was turning  1, we wanted to join in the fun and send her some great Sama Baby organics clothing 🙂

Once again. Thank you for our amazing gift bag. We love everything and Maddie had fun going through the bag

Babies – Why Are They Vulnerable? April 30, 2010

I want to share with you this amazing article I found on It is great to see a single dad’s point of view on babies and the environment, especially one that shares the Sama viewpoint 🙂

As a single dad I make it one of my greatest priorities to be well-informed about what is best for my son and take his upbringing very seriously. I may not be able to be there for him during the day, but I can at least help his minder to bring him up in the best environment.

You do not have to be a scientist or a well-informed individual to believe that the early years of a baby are crucial to their development. Babies are fragile little human beings and the world they are exposed to profoundly affect them as they grow.

How do chemicals from the outside world enter our bodies and why are babies more exposed and vulnerable?

  • Via the Mouth (Food & Water) – Per measure of body weight, babies and infants eat up to 4 times more food than adults do. Consequently, they are ingesting up to 4 times more toxins and chemicals than adults for every measure of weight. WOW!
  • Air – In our first few years, the air we breathe in is double the amount of air (per measure of weight) that we will breathe in as adults. Babies and young children are therefore far more exposed to chemicals and toxins in the air.
  • Skin – Babies skin is more permeable than adult skin allowing chemicals to penetrate much easily.

In addition to the physiological factors that increase the susceptibility of toxins to a  baby,  behavioural patterns and early development  also increase their exposure.

  • Hand to mouth – Babies spend a great deal of their time by placing things in their mouths. They are not picky either and as long as it can go inside their mouths, they will put it there. Not surprisingly, this behaviour will result in a greater exposure to chemicals and toxins.
  • Ground play – Babies and children spend much of their time on the ground. There are many toxins and chemicals they can come into contact with while they are on the ground both in and outside the house.
  • Physiologically undeveloped – Baby’s and young children’s bodily systems are generally underdeveloped compared to those of adults and as a result their ability to process toxins and chemicals may be weak.
  • Rapid development and growth – Growth and development occurs most in the first few years of life and as a result, any toxins which interfere with systems which are still being established in the human body can greatly impede development and destroy cells such as those of the brain and nervous system.

Please take all this in, and remember babies are far more vulnerable than our adult selves and they need our protection from the world we have created.

Also, leave comments and share ways YOU protect your baby from the environment!

How to Go Green: Babies

[by Kathreen Ricketson]
A new baby entering your life can create an enormous number of unexpected changes. Along with the little one comes a whole new category of things to purchase — not only the obvious large items like furniture and diapers, but also all the unforeseen extras that seem to accumulate. While having a baby is consumer heaven, the key is to not be gulled into an unnecessary buying frenzy. In truth, a baby has very minimal needs. Although the essentials are important, there is more to a sustainable life with your baby than cloth diapers, organic baby food, and fair-trade clothing.

The article goes on to give GREEN TIPS a couple of our favorite are:

Dress your baby in smart green clothing
All those designer baby clothes are cute and oh so hard to resist in their fruity colors. But be careful. Not only does a baby grow out of clothes amazingly fast, they are constantly sending bodily fluids flying onto those precious outfits. The baby couture might be better replaced with convenient one-piece suits in practical white terry cloth. Choosing organic hemp or cotton, bamboo or wool fabrics made without toxic chemicals are best against a baby’s sensitive skin and last longer with the constant washing. Second-hand clothing is the cheapest and most sustainable option. Get hand-me-downs from friends and family or look in thrift shops, Craigslist, or Freecycle. Also, shop for amazing sales!

Lather up with natural skin care
It’s very easy to get sucked into the constant advertising of baby powders, creams, and lotions. But the best baby lotion is plain old olive oil—cheap, natural, and un-perfumed. As for other products, keep it as natural, organic, and fragrance-free as possible. For more on this, take a look at their guides for How to Go Green: Women’s Personal Care and How to Go Green: Natural Skin Care.
