Zack, Kate, and son Shepherd Hanson are Sama Fans!! May 28, 2010

Zack, Kate, and son John Ira Shepherd Hanson (“Shepherd”) are Sama Fans!

Zac Hanson and His Wife Have a Boy!

In August 2000, Hanson was introduced to amateur model Kathryn “Kate” Tucker. The two began dating in 2001 and their relationship continued for four years before Hanson proposed in February 2005. They were married on June 3, 2006, in a private ceremony held at Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia. In the July 27, 2007 issue of People magazine, Hanson and Tucker stated that they planned to “wait a while” before having children. In November 2007, they announced that they would be expecting their first child in May 2008.

In People magazine, Hanson said of impending fatherhood, “I can’t wait to meet this person….It will be fun to see five little ones grow up together. I know watching them will inspire a lot of music.” The couple’s son John Ira Shepherd Hanson (“Shepherd”) was born on May 27, 2008 in Tulsa.

We recently sent little Shepherd Hanson some Sama Baby gear for his 2nd birthday and received this thank you note through Jewels and Pinstripes:

Thank you so much for the wonderful gift box for Shepherd’s 2nd Birthday! Everything was greatly appreciated, and we especially live Mabel’s Labels and stride rite shoes. We look forward to wearing the Zooni hat this winter. The last one was such a big hit – moms stopped me everywhere whenever he wore it! Thank you for thinking of us and auctioning a maternity box online!

Make Sure Your Memorial Day is red, white, blue, and green! May 27, 2010

I came across this post on,  a new Fair Trade fashion company offering stylish sweatshop-free & eco-friendly footwear, clothing and accessories. They have some great ideas on how to keep your Memorial traditions eco-friendly this year 🙂

At the Sama office we celebrate our Memorial Day in a green friendly way!

Let’s start a new American tradition of making a smaller imprint on the Earth, while still indulging in our fun! To help this new tradition along, we have put together some helpful tips on how to make sure your Memorial Day is red, white, blue, and green! ( Tips from,

1) Green that Grill: BBQ is a true Memorial Day and summer tradition and it is easy to green your grill.  Replacing your chemical laden charcoal to more earth friendly means such as wood briquettes or natural organic charcoal. Either of these choices will leave your food without the burning of coal, petroleum products, sawdust, or limestone, which are all toxic.

2) Hold the Meat: Although traditional American BBQs include tons and tons of meat! To truly green your BBQ, we suggest you hold the meat. The meat industry consumes more than a third of the fossil fuels in the US and contributes 18% of greenhouse gases, which is even more than the transportation industry! Environmentalists, along with the Sama Team :), have long been promoting a veggie based diet as a way to green your life, so why not make the switch for your BBQ this year! There are hundreds of great veggie based “meat” style products on the market such as Veggie Burgers, Soy Dogs, Soy Sausage, Veggie Ribs etc.

3) Organic & Fair Trade Drinks: Even if we try, we can not deny that many American holidays revolve around drinking! And Memorial Day is no stranger to this rule. Luckily more and more organic beer, wine, and spirits are on the market these days. Try your best to support your local micro breweries when selecting beer.

4) Stay Local: We know, we know, a “staycation” is nowhere near as exciting as traveling far away to go camping. However, traveling by car for long distances or by plane is not so eco-friendly. Now we aren’t saying you should camp out in your own backyard literally (although that can be an adventure), we just mean look for destinations close to home. Stay within 20-50 miles of your own home! You may find that there are wonderous campgrounds, beautiful hiking trails, or a pretty lake nearby that you never noticed. You can even do a search on Reserve America to find campgrounds near you or look into the National and State Park systems for local ideas.

Of course, one tip to add to the bunch,  is to celebrate with your children in organic style, by dressing them on Sama Baby Organics. Our adorable fashion forward garments are festive and comfortable, are 100% organic.

Thanks for these great tips!!

Soleil Moon Frye and Family gifted Sama!! May 26, 2010

In the day-to-day effort to balance work and family, Soleil Moon Frye sets her expectations high – and forgives herself when those efforts fall short.  “We just do the best that we can as moms, as business owners, and when we fall down and we fail, we say, we’ll do it better next time.”  She is proud owner of The Little Seed‘s eco-friendly Private Label children’s clothing line.

“The hardest part is just finding the balance and making sure there’s always the aspect of family and that the family is always first, and that you have that balance.”

Known to millions as the adorable Punky Brewster, actress Soleil Moon Frye began acting when she was only two years old. The daughter of actor Virgil_Frye, Soleil cut her teeth on projects like the TV movie Who_Will_Love_My_Children? before scoring the role of Punky at the age of eight. Audiences fell in love with the precocious child, and she stayed with the show until 1988. After it wrapped, Frye continued to remain creative and active, appearing in films such as Summertime_Switch and even directing the 2004 film Sonny_Boy.

We recently received a thank you note through Jewels and Pinstripes for the gifts she received:

Thank you for all of the goodies, we loved them.  The girls were so excited about everything in the gift bag and we are certainly enjoying all of the wonderful products.  Your generosity is so appreciated.
Best, Soleil

BPA Protection: Spinach and Soy May 25, 2010

Eat your Spinach and Soy! Great news for an office full of Vegetarians  🙂

When parents learn about the possible dangers from chemical estrogens in the environment, such as those found in some plastics, pesticides, and personal care products, one of the first questions I’m asked is, “What to do if your child was already exposed?”

BPA, one of these chemical estrogens, is found in hard plastics, in the linings of many food cans, and in many cash register receipts. And it doesn’t stay there. It gets into our bodies when we eat or drink something that has been stored or especially heated in one of these containers. It could get into our bodies when we handle receipts, then eat without washing our hands.

The CDC estimates that right now BPA is in the bodies of 93 percent of Americans, with higher levels in teens than in adults, and higher levels in children than in teens. WOW!

In animal studies, exposure to even trace amounts early in life has been linked to health problems including obesity, early puberty, and breast and prostate cancer.

Researchers at Duke University have shown that this early exposure affects the offspring’s epigenetics: it turns on and off different genes, resulting in the problems that we see.

Here’s the exciting part: They found that they could completely block BPA damage, even in the face of significant exposure, by giving pregnant animals extra folate (found mostly in green leafy vegetables – foliage – such as spinach) or extra genistein (found mostly in legumes such as soy). The amount of genistein given was comparable to what we would get in our diets if we ate soy foods regularly.

These nutrients switched the genes back the way they should be, and the BPA effect was completely nullified. The researchers describe this as compelling evidence that certain nutrients can counteract BPA when given during pregnancy.

Beyond this, the researchers propose that these nutrients could block the effects of chemical estrogen exposures, even if given later in childhood and possibly even in adulthood.

Study: ADHD linked to pesticide exposure May 20, 2010

Amazing how everyone is catching on to what we have been aware of for years now! Yet another reason to GO GREEN…. GO ORGANIC!

Detectable levels of pesticides are present in a large number of fruits and vegetables sold in the U.S., according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Detectable levels of pesticides are present in a large number of fruits and vegetables sold in the U.S., according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

( — Children exposed to higher levels of a type of pesticide found in trace amounts on commercially grown fruit and vegetables are more likely to have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder than children with less exposure, a nationwide study suggests.
Researchers measured the levels of pesticide byproducts in the urine of 1,139 children from across the United States. Children with above-average levels of one common byproduct had roughly twice the odds of getting a diagnosis of ADHD, according to the study, which appears in the journal Pediatrics.
Exposure to the pesticides, known as organophosphates, has been linked to behavioral and cognitive problems in children in the past, but previous studies have focused on communities of farm workers and other high-risk populations. This study is the first to examine the effects of exposure in the population at large.
Organophosphates are “designed” to have toxic effects on the nervous system, says the lead author of the study, Maryse Bouchard, Ph.D., a researcher in the department of environmental and occupational health at the University of Montreal. “That’s how they kill pests.”
The pesticides act on a set of brain chemicals closely related to those involved in ADHD, Bouchard explains, “so it seems plausible that exposure to organophosphates could be associated with ADHD-like symptoms.”
Environmental Protection Agency regulations have eliminated most residential uses for the pesticides (including lawn care and termite extermination), so the largest source of exposure for children is believed to be food, especially commercially grown produce.
Although kids should not stop eating fruits and vegetables, buying organic or local produce whenever possible is a good idea, says Bouchard.
