Sama Baby supports Local Elementary School! November 2, 2009

We support local schools!
West U Elementary Bazaar:

I want to tell you about the beauty of talking to your neighbors, and how things can work out organically! One of my neighbors had mentioned that their son goes to West U Elementary.  I thought that was pretty interesting, and one day they needed a ride to go pick him up.  I offered, as I thought it would be nice to see the school – and helped him get his son! In the process, we ran into a set of parents that were also picking up their kids – and my neighbor was mentioning that I owned an organic baby line called Sama Baby.  The parents immediately responded and said, “I read about you on the front page of our community newspaper a few months ago – congratulations – that is so cool!”  I had no idea how much people actually remembered reading that article – as it was posted in December of 2008!  After that, my neighbor proceeded to put Sama Baby postcards at West U – at a little table in the front area.  After three days,  he went back just to see if people had picked any up, and there were only three left. How crazy is that?  If you know that your school has any little area for postcards, please let us know by commenting – and we would love to have you put postcards with a discount at your school.  Moms apparently love our postcards, and think they are so interesting – as it talks about who we are, why we do what we do, and what clothing we have to offer!

BIRTH FAIR Houston – Wrap Up! October 30, 2009

BIRTH Fair took place at United Way from 11am-4pm in Houston, Texas. The event was focused on BIRTH, and all the opportunities and ways you can get involved in Houston – with midwives, doulas, and birth centers. It was amazing to meet so many other female business owners in Houston – who were focused on children, natural approaches to birth, and organic.  We had a wonderful little fashion show featuring 15 models in Sama Baby. It was daunting, but being the MC was quite a bit of fun – I spoke about each outfit, as well as each child’s favorite activity! One kid’s favorite food was tofu and broccoli. Sounds like my kind of kid!

BIRTH FAIR

Many moms purchased Sama Baby outfits, and were so excited to see such young entrepreneurs focused on all natural, and organic products for children. It was also wonderful to build a partnership with Bay Area Birth Center – the same area I grew up in when I was a young child in Houston.  They will be putting postcards in each of their birth bags, and leave our postcards at the front with discount codes for moms in the area! We love parterning, and if you are a midwife, doula, birth center, boutique, wellness center, we would love to cross-promote and partner together!  We even built some relationships with West U Wellness and are going to talk about doing a fun little Bollywood Green Chai Chat for their center – since I have grown up in West U for such a long time!

BIRTH Fair was a wonderful way to connect with other moms, and other hospitals, mom groups, and much more!

The Day in the Life of a Children’s Fashion Designer – and no, not like Paris Hilton Style! October 28, 2009

You may think that the way I design may be similar to this:

paris-hilton-to-design-children-s-clothing-line-mary-kate-olsen-ashley-olsen-olsen-twins-news-afe6b88bfc14888f57737f2ff38cea39

Paris Hilton and Little Child!

But.. I don’t. I dont create miniature versions of adult clothing… which is the misconception – Sama Baby is a playful, childish line with a beautiful inspiration from India!

So, as a designer of a children’s clothing line – I have been looking at the trends of which moms buy products. Sometimes I even ask moms in airports, boutiques, grocery stores – why did you put that on your child? (of course, in an inquisitive manner, not insulting!) What is it about that garment that makes your child comfortable, and what is your favorite silhouette?  Now, I know that may be weird to you – but who knows – you might be sitting next to me on a plane with your cute little one, and I might ask you these same questions.

I have figured out a few things that moms focus on. If you have any other suggestions, please comment because I will incorporate it into my next collection.  Every mom’s voice counts when it comes to Sama Baby!

  1. Accessibility – how easily can I slip this on and off my child?
  2. Comfort – how comfortable is my child in this? Does this make them itch? Are they allergic?
  3. Size – does this fit my child well? Too well? Too loose?
  4. Warmth – will this garment keep my child at the right temperature – keep them warm when needed or, keep them cool when needed?
  5. Price – is this a good price for the quality I am getting?
  6. Design – is this designed with good materials? Is it beautiful? How will my child look in this garment?

So, these are the top six pointers I use when designing a collection. Every single garment I create, I use these points to figure out how to create something that is beautiful, well-priced, comfortable, and easy access.

Take A Walk Inside the VANITY FAIR office… August 24, 2009

Hello Everyone!

On our trip in NYC – I was so excited to walk into the Conde Nast building.  It was very similiar to the lobby of the Devil Wears Prada… as I have watched the movie repeatedly over 100 times – and probably can recite it to you..

DSC06889Beautiful outfits, wonderful summer dresses, expensive handbags, and great little flats that coordinated all the way down to a pair of earrings. Fashion in NYC is absolutely unbelievable, and as I was walking into the VANITY FAIR office, I saw every type.  The place has SUCH high security – that your day pass will change color by the end of the day when you walk out – so that you can’t come in the next day – now talk about high tech!

Alexis Bryan Morgan, Assistant Fashion Editor of VANITY FAIR was there to greet Shivani and I – as we met with her in the headquarters.  She was bubbly, excited, and loved our line.  She really loved the fact that we were family run, kept our company with high integrity even while growing exponentially.

Of course – we would never leave without gifting her cute items….
We gifted her with our new pink halter dress – at http://www.samababy.com/product_p/ss-g3619.htm

and some yummy elephant accessories in pink – http://www.samababy.com/product_p/ec-b619.htm

It was wonderful to meet her and share our story about Sama Baby – and our passion for organic cotton, green, and natural products for babies!

Did someone say Cookie? August 20, 2009

We absolutely love Cookie Magazine – the photography is designed beautifully, and people love the fact that it is so fashion forward, and has great celebrities on it.

We were invited to visit the Cookie Magazine headquarters in NYC and meet with their fashion team – as they loved Sama Baby and our affordable new denim line. Cookie loved how beautiful our items are – and were happy to meet the two sisters that made this company out of their own home!

We loved their offices – beautifully designed lobby and happy employees! Cookie magazine is a great resource as well!

Reading Up on the Industry August 19, 2009

DSC06959As most people do – we read up on what is going on in our industry – what are moms thinking about, talking about, reading about!?

Well Kiwi Magazine is a great place to get a lot of great resources – people love reading about ways to green their home, how to gear up for another back to school August, and what is fashionable!

Here we are at a yummy little French Bakery – eating our fine herbes omelettes and wonderful hot chocolate – reading up on Kiwi Magazine. The childrens industry is such a happy place – and its great that we are in an industry where people are out to help nurture healthy happy babies – as we like to do at Sama Baby. Sama Baby is an organic cotton line that focuses on this as its sole mission – and providing great service and design!

Editors Showcase – Modern Moms – New York City March 25, 2009

The event that links top brands to reach the audience of Modern Moms!

The event that links top brands to reach the audience of Modern Moms!

Hi Everyone,

Neha here again! After returning from a long trip from India and then a quick trip to California, we headed out to NYC for the Editors Showcase. It was a great and successful trip!

New York was quite a city – I was very nervous about going back, since I loved it so much, but it was really going at such a speed – I was shocked at how fast I used to be going at.

As for the Editors Showcase – I found the best garment rack on the planet. For anyone that ever needs a garment rack or goes to a trade show and needs a great garment rack – go to Bed Bath and Beyond – and get the commercial Garment rack 59.99. It was amazing.. considering that at Expo West the Target rack fell over a few times, and was a bit of a hazard.

The event was wonderful – we were the only organic cotton children’s clothing line at the event, and people loved our new designs for fall and our cute dresses for Spring. People were excited that our prices were reasonable, that our story was unique, and that we were so young!

One of my favorite meetings was with Polly at O Magazine – she was so excited to hear about our story, and female entrepreneurs in today’s economy. I also met with some great editors from Parents, Time Out NY, Kiwi, Today show and Parenting.com!

I am super excited that we met with so many great editors who were interested in our line, and who we are as a team – and esp. excited about our new denim line! We hope to get quite a few features for April since it is the month for Earth Day!

Here is some further information from Editor Showcase’s Website:

As a brand manager, each day you are faced with the overriding question of how to break through clutter and get the attention of editors, reporters, producers, bloggers, and beyond. And you ponder how, through it all, you will be able to make just the right connection that earns your brand a moment in the spotlight and a seat at the table with your target audience: modern moms.

Editor Showcase brings you and your brand front and center with the influential media that most moms consult before making their purchasing decisions. No phone calls. No pitching. No unsolicited emails. Just you, and more than 100 editors looking to learn more about the products/services that would be of interest to their readers. Better yet, you accomplish in just a few hours of pretty serious networking what would normally take months of legwork and sleepless nights to achieve.

Experts on Green Organic Goodness! January 9, 2009

Neha with Lara Bell

Neha with Lara Bell

Started my early morning talking with Lara Bell, KTBU, Channel 55 with a great soundbyte at Mint Baby Uptown Park. It was great to talk to her about the importance of organic products and why moms should focus on organic cotton. If moms want to be green by taking care of the environment around their children – they should def. think about the closest thing touching their children’s skin – the clothes they wear!

I had a great time. I really enjoy being on TV and had no idea how much fun it is to inform, be in front of a camera, and talk your heart out about what you feel most passionate about!

Anyways, it’s about 2am in Colorado, and I have a super early morning of meetings, and then of course, a Tweet Up with Chicks Who Click 09!

Goodnight readers!
